My 3rd Act - July 2026
And the Surprises Keep Coming…

July 2026 Issue

When I started this journey of self-reflection
and self-exploration six months ago,
prepping for and writing this article,
I made what was perhaps the most surprising discovery of all..
For as long as I can remember, my expectation of the retirement years—my “Third Act”—was that they represented a kind of finality. A resting place. A hard stop. A chapter where life gradually slowed down and settled into a humdrum routine.
But surprise, surprise—retirement here in the Lowcountry has been anything but final, restful, or boring.
There isn’t one single thing that has made the difference, nor is there anything grand, dramatic, or extraordinary. It is really the accumulation of life’s little things.
For most of my working years, I never had a consistent morning routine. Making the bed, putting away the laundry, tidying up the house, those things got done when they got done because there was never enough time. Now, my morning routine has become one of the most meaningful and important parts of my day. In fact, on the rare occasion when I have to leave the house early and cannot complete it, I feel the difference for the rest of the day. Those simple rituals provide a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and grounding that I never expected to appreciate so much.
In many ways, retirement has taught me to pay attention differently—not only to the importance and cadence of my own routines but also to the people and experiences around me. The environment in which I live, the activities I enjoy, and, most importantly, the friends I have made here continue to enrich my life in unexpected ways. Whether it is discovering a new recipe, finding inspiration for a home décor project, learning about a hobby I had never considered, or simply hearing a different perspective, I find myself constantly learning.
I hope there is never any shame in admitting that we continue to be influenced and inspired by others as we age. In many ways, that openness to learning is what keeps us growing. The amazing people I have met here in the Lowcountry have encouraged me to explore ideas, experiences, and possibilities that I might never have considered before. They have helped me see new opportunities not only in my home and surroundings but also within myself.
Perhaps that is the greatest surprise of this Third Act: Growth does not stop simply because I am no longer working. Life continues to unfold. New friendships are formed, new interests emerge, and new perspectives take shape. The journey of becoming is not reserved for younger generations. If anything, I’ve discovered this stage of life offers the freedom to continue evolving in ways I never imagined.
And so, the surprises keep coming.
