Dr. Anthony Mattis, owner of the Chiropractic Wellness Center in Bluffton, eight-year area resident and certified Passion Test Facilitator, offers the unique chance to open strategic doors in careers and personal relationships. The following is a conversation I had with Dr. Mattis about finding passion:

NancyLee: What interested you in becoming certified to give The Passion Test?

Dr. Mattis: The death of my wife and I felt it was an amazing way for me to help people find their hidden desires, discover who they really are and what they truly want in life.

NancyLee: How does it work?

Dr. Mattis: After asking a series of questions, I analyze the answers and discuss the test findings, which help determine an individual’s personal desires and true passions. Often, the things we think we want are not our inner most desires. Many people are confused and disappointed in trying to discover the perfect path or that ideal job. This test uncovers hidden traits, which turn into guidelines for a career, a change in career or a new pathway to success.

NancyLee: How is the test administered?

Dr. Mattis: I offer three group workshops of no more than 20 people for $99 per person, or three 60-minute individual sessions for $375.

NancyLee: Is it male or female specific?

Dr. Mattis: No. Gender does not matter, as the questions address anyone’s inner feelings.

NancyLee: Did you design the test?

Dr. Mattis: No, it was Janet Bray Atwood and Chris Atwood out of Iowa.

NancyLee: ”How much time is needed to take the test effectively?

Dr. Mattis: Usually, about an hour.

NancyLee: How do you feel it is different or better than other similar tests?

Dr. Mattis: It is a much more concise process with much more clarity. It stimulates and uncovers hidden or suppressed attributes and leads to a new awareness of self.

NancyLee: Could you give an example of a few questions?

Dr. Mattis: Let’s say, list the top five most important things in your life. You might list: quality time with my spouse, children, a good relationship, travel to a new country, worship/meditation time.

NancyLee: And what does that tell you?

Dr. Mattis: We have to delve deeper, prioritize even more. Now you must decide if the first one is really the most important, or do the numbers flip-flop as you become more introspective. Often the first priority drops and another takes its place. There may be many surprises when the mind is cleared.

NancyLee: Are there other examples you can share?

Dr. Mattis: It’s especially interesting and challenging for a person to be explicit when asked to contemplate and complete the following sentence in writing: When my life is ideal, I am… (example: creating and writing or spending time in prayer). Often people are shocked at the results. Harris Interactive, one of the world’s leading market research firms conducted studies in 2003 and 2005, and found 70 percent and 80 percent respectively, of people were dissatisfied in what they did. This leads to bitterness, anger and resentment.

NancyLee: Have you taken the test? Did it reveal anything special to you?

Dr. Mattis: No major surprises. The death of my wife stimulated my interest in the test. It opened my mind to the fact I had been hiding away since my wife took her life three years ago at age 30. My children, ages 13, 11 and 5, and I suffered greatly. She and I were both life coaches, and when she killed herself, I simply shut down. The Passion Test helped me realize this and gave me an arsenal of truth. Now I can talk to people again and interact in the community, utilizing my number one gift of coaching and helping others. God wants us to fulfill the gifts He gave us. I also find I talk with God more than ever.

NancyLee: What other qualities do you think The Passion Test uncovers?

Dr. Mattis: It helps people discover their life’s work. We have so much energy and are talented in so many areas. Often much of it is not expressed. So, where does all this energy go? We need to recognize life is fleeting. Too many are waiting for tomorrow and hoping it will be better. Why wait? Change now. Passion for life offers happiness and success.
