Men and Their Chairs

7th Annual Celebration of Local Men

There’s something special about the relationship a man has with his chair. Curiously, we wanted to see some of the chairs our local Beaufort County men are attached to, and therefore, went looking for a few good men. We did a good job finding them, and not only did they have a favorite “chair,” creative as it may be, but a lot of heart as well!

Something about me that would surprise people is: I have a 1971 Ford tractor and I love it. I use it on a little farm we have in Jasper County.
One thing I hope to see in my lifetime is: The South Carolina Brain Institute come to fruition. In April 2016, the SC House of Representatives passed a bill allowing people to donate brain tissue for research like organ donors. I have been working with Clemson University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina to open a brain research institute to study anticipated tissue provided through the program.
One of the craziest things I’ve ever done: At age 21, I bought a 29-foot sail boat here on HHI and sailed it to the Bahamas without really knowing what I was doing.
On any given Saturday, you can find me: Watching college football. My wife, Anne and I love SEC football. We suffer from minor depression after football season.
Was your mom or dad most influential in your life? Both really. My dad died when I was 19 years old. Up until that point he was the most influential because of his gregarious personality. After that, I would have to say my mom was the most influential on me because we became closer after my dad’s death.

What you should know about my chair (history of chair): I sit in a chair that metaphorically dates back to the 1700s.
If my chair could say something about me, it would say: This guy really considers it a privilege to be in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Was your mom or dad most influential in your life? Mom. She was ahead of her time on human and animal rights.
My greatest achievement (other than family) is: Living the dream.
What you should know about my chair: It’s a rescue— adopted, and splashed up with a new suit of colors. The kids blessed it with their handprints. Old and weakened from years of tough duty, it now wiles away its days in the company of an old artist on an island.

I truly would not be half the person I am without their love for me, for each other, and for our family. Additionally, my grandfather has been an inspiration to me. He is the best example of what I hope to be. Through his actions he has proven to me that if you are kind and treat everyone you meet with respect and dignity you will go far.

In its short life it has made its way to Manning, Ravenel, Big Estate, Hampton and Twiggs County, and has been a witness to a few successes and many defeats.
If my chair could say something about me, it would tell you…If there is a way to screw up a turkey hunt, I have found it.
If I could offer one piece of advice it would be…Enjoy life. A good friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer a little over a year ago. Four weeks after his diagnosis, we had lost him. He was in his early 60s, had saved his whole life and was about to retire. He can’t enjoy the many things he had worked so hard to be able to do. From that point, I decided that I am going to live as best I can while I’m here. So far it is working pretty well.

I am the sum total of my life experiences and “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away.” —Vicki Corona
Something about me that would surprise people is:
As much as I love music and singing, I can’t play an instrument and I can’t read music.
One thing that I would love to see in my lifetime is:
EQUALITY. All people treated the same regardless of race, creed, or color. We put bandages on racial issues.

Both. My mother had a strong spiritual influence because she encouraged my sister and me to go to church every Sunday. She also worked very hard to make sure we had food, clothing and shelter. I was told at a young age that if you want to gain anything in this world, you have to work for it. I have been working two or more jobs since I was 15 years old.

My greatest achievement is:
Earning my degree to become a teacher and having the opportunity to influence the lives of students.
What you should know about my chair:
Honestly, I don’t have favorite chair. I don’t sit down enough to enjoy a chair. I love to work and stay busy.
If I could offer one piece of advice it would be:
Be careful who you consider your friend and who you trust. Friend is a word that is widely misused. It’s very difficult to find a person with whom you can develop a bond, one you can trust, and one who has your best interest at heart.
