About the Artist - Candace Lovely
Artist Candace Whittemore Lovely is known for painting non-confrontational views of contemporary American scenes, especially landscapes of treasured locales and people at play in idyllic locations. Her grandmother used to tell her that the cure for everything is saltwater—whether it’s sweat, tears, or the sea. This could be the reason she chooses to paint soothing coastal landscapes. Or, it could be that she’s happiest when surrounded by water. A patron once told her that people want her paintings in their homes so they can smell the salt air ascribed within in the canvas, which is a compliment to her draftsmanship, realism and perhaps the secret to her talent for rousing the viewer’s senses.
Everything around the beach has a distinct smell. The shells, the vegetation, the sand and the sea all cause people to recall pleasant moments. Candace’s artistic gift delivers charm and healing through her romantic perspective. Even the titles of her paintings reflect the allure of the seashore—”Salt Aire Roses,” “Salt Water Blues” and “Sea Shell Pink,” for example. This month’s cover features “The Rose Path,” a beautiful seaside path that beckons one to stop and smell the roses.
As an American Impressionist painter, Candace challenges herself to choose her subjects and compositions with care. For example, in May she travels to Water Island in the Virgin Islands to paint tropical, multi-colored, spring blossoms, then goes to Nantucket in June to paint delicate rosa rugosa blooms. And of course, when she’s at home on Hilton Head, she takes full advantage of ripening sea oats, which are then trumped by September’s yellow asters.
Today’s technology has allowed Candace to expand her artistic vision of nature’s coastal beauty in various mediums. She uses an online distributor to sell affordable, high-quality reproductions in a variety of new products, ranging from notecards and prints on a giclée canvas to indoor/outdoor pillows, silk scarves and iPhone covers.
