About the Cover Artist — Lisa Henderling
by Lindsay Gifford
Pink Magazine is ecstatic to dive into July with the dynamic design work of local Bluffton artist Lisa Henderling.
Born in Queens, NY, Lisa has known she wanted to be an illustrator since she was 7-years-old. She came from a creative family—her parents were professional dancers. Her mother was especially supportive, nourishing her creative spirit through dance and art lessons starting at age 8. “My desire was always to be an illustrator, not a fine artist. As a kid, I had favorite fashion illustrators whose work I would save from magazines or newspaper ads, and I would try to copy them. My favorite thing in the world was to draw, and usually, I was drawing women, often with pink hair!” exclaimed Lisa.
Lisa attended the High School of Art & Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City where she earned a degree in Fashion Illustration. At the age of 20, she left New York to take full advantage of the freedom being a freelance artist offers. She indulged in her vagabond nature, moving all over the country experiencing different lifestyles. She has called Houston, New Orleans, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, Northern California, Oregon, and Rhinebeck, NY, home. She now resides in the beautiful South Carolina Lowcountry.
Filling a star-studded portfolio, Lisa has created illustrations for corporate firms, toy companies, book publishers, magazines, advertisements, packaging, and many products. She has worked with an impressive array of companies, including Macy’s, Coca-Cola, Scholastic, Disney, The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Ritz Carlton, Princess Cruise Line, Paramount Pictures, Procter & Gamble, Hallmark, most of the top book publishers, and so many more. If her style was a good fit, she would often be commissioned to do work for particular projects. “For instance, Coca-Cola wanted artwork of images from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life to use on Coke memorabilia. I did lots of research about the movie and then drew my version of it,” Lisa explained. (Check it out on her website!)
When asked about her favorite projects, Lisa noted creating illustrations for BIC Women’s Razors, drawing women at the beach. Her work on this project won numerous awards. She was also hired by Hasbro to illustrate the packaging cover for the Yahtzee game box. And, she said her work for Macy’s always involved fun projects like mailers, billboards, store displays, cosmetics, and holiday chocolates packaging. It was all very fashion-forward…her favorite thing!
With nearly 40 years of experience, Lisa continues to draw and create in her studio every day, working on projects and playing with new ideas. Today, all of her work is digital, but it often begins at her drawing board, where she develops a sketch that she scans and finishes on her computer. Her vibe is stylized and graphic, with a sharp sense of humor and movement. This month’s cover art, entitled The Diver, is inspired by the urbane beauty Miami offers—the deco feel, tropical colors, palms, and aqua water, which all playout in this piece.
“I think of myself as a decorative artist; I’m just trying to add a bit of beauty and joy to the world. Just hoping the art will bring a smile or a happy feeling to the viewer.”
Keep an eye out for Lisa’s newest undertaking, a series of prints depicting the Lowcountry lifestyle, wildlife, and food. Prints of her work are available at: www.Inprnt.com/gallery/lisahenderling or you can visit her website:
