About the Cover Artist — Dr. Nancy DeMore
by Lindsay Gifford
For three decades as a dedicated breast cancer surgeon, Nancy DeMore, M.D. walked beside her patients through some of the most vulnerable chapters of their lives. “I witnessed quiet courage, private fear, and the profound resilience that emerges when someone is forced to rebuild themselves from the inside out. That experience changed my eye long before I ever picked up a paint brush,” Nancy said.
Dr. DeMore’s time in medicine has cultivated an inner depth to her artwork beyond what meets the eye. This month’s cover is entitled: “She Blooms in Silence.” It explores the quiet, interior strength of a woman who has learned to transform her lived experience into something luminous. Nancy explained, “In this portrait, the figure is rendered in still profile, yet her surface is alive with layered, expressive marks—floral forms, abstract gestures, and shifting color passages that read almost like emotional cartography. These elements are not embellishment; they are the visual record of what she has carried, endured, and ultimately transmuted.” The inspiration for “She Blooms in Silence” came from observing how resilience often unfolds privately, without spectacle. “The silence referenced in the title is not the absence of voice, but the protected space where healing and self-reclamation take root. I hope viewers sense that her stillness is intentional, not passive. That her color is testimony, not ornament. And that her silence is a fertile ground rather than a void,” Nancy said.
Growing up in Newton, Massachusetts, Nancy discovered her passion for visual art following her distinguished career in medicine. In transitioning from the operating room to the studio, art became a powerful new outlet for creativity, reflection, and self-expression—almost a homage to all she absorbed during her years in medicine, culminating with an artistic voice that is deeply personal, blending introspection with energetic visual storytelling. Nancy explained, “In many ways, painting became a continuation of the same work: tending to the human story, illuminating resilience, and giving form to the quiet transformations that define a life.”
Now, an active member of the Charleston, SC, arts community, Nancy is a gallery member of the Charleston Artist Guild (CAG), where she currently serves as Director of Exhibitions. Always an academic with years of extensive medical training, research and teaching, Nancy graduated from the Milan Art Institute Master Program in 2026. She is a member of the Society of Professional Artists and has further developed her artistic practice through studies with acclaimed artists Silvia Belviso Blair and Dru Blair at the Blair Center for the Arts.
Her work received First Place at the Goose Creek Artist Guild Exhibition in 2026 and Third Place in both the 2024 and 2025 Charleston Artist Guild Fall Signature Shows. In 2025, her artwork was featured in the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition at Charleston City Gallery and the MOJA Juried Art Exhibition at the Avery Research Center. Her work has also been published in Humanitas, the literary journal of the Medical University of South Carolina.
