Art League Gallery Presents Debi West: “Layers of Life”
April exhibition offers an immersive exploration of memory, transformation, and renewal

April 2026 Issue
Local artist and longtime art educator Debi West brings “Layers of Life” to the Art League Gallery this April. Showcasing more than 40 years of creative exploration, the exhibition revisits and transforms works from her personal archive, turning past canvases, photographs, and surfaces into renewed expressions. Emphasizing curiosity, reflection, and the evolving nature of both art and life, “Layers of Life” invites viewers to engage with each piece as part of a living process, where meaning grows and shifts over time.
“Layers of Life” is a conversation between who I was, who I am, and who I am still becoming. It is both a personal archive and a shared experience,” Debi said. “Rather than leaving earlier pieces behind, I return to them, recycling, reworking, and reimagining, so nothing is erased. Each layer carries traces of what came before, reflecting how meaning accumulates through experience, reflection, and time.”
Debi’s distinguished career bridges both studio practice and art education. She spent 25 years teaching in Gwinnett County, Georgia, including a decade as Fine Arts Department Chair at North Gwinnett High School, before transitioning into educational consulting and graduate instruction. She continues to mentor educators nationwide through her writing and teaching.
A nationally recognized artist and National Board Certified art educator (retired), Debi has exhibited her work across the country. Her honors include National Elementary Art Educator, Southeastern Secondary Art Educator, and Distinguished Fellow of the National Art Education Association. She has also authored more than 200 articles and several books.
With “Layers of Life”, Debi invites visitors to actively participate in the creative process. “As an art educator, I have always believed that art is most powerful when it invites participation,” she said. “Visitors are encouraged to contribute images, marks, and ideas, collectively building an interactive piece that will shift and metamorphose throughout the exhibition.”
This year’s exhibition carries special meaning for Debi: “I came close to not applying,” she shared. “After three years of rejection in what is a highly competitive process, it would have been easy to stop trying. But I paused and thought about what I would tell my students, and the answer was simple: Never give up.” She didn’t. Now, she is not only preparing for a major show, but also grateful to share her work with the community during the popular RBC Heritage Golf Tournament week.
Debi is committed to making art accessible to all. In addition to larger works, visitors will find pieces available as notecards, jewelry, works on paper, canvases, and limited-edition prints, ensuring there is something for everyone—and every budget—to take home and enjoy.
