Hometown: Franklin, NC
Career: By day, I’m an esthetician and own a spa on the South End HHI. Most evenings, I’m a dancer and assistant instructor at Hilton Head Island Ballroom Studio in Bluffton. And in my down time, I’m creating Swarovski™rhinestone ballroom dresses to sparkle across the dance floor!
Family: I’m married to retired Marine, Scott Green, who now owns and operates a home renovation company, Precision Home Services. We share the pleasure of raising a wonderful young man, Cameron, 16, our son. He is also involved in the world of ballroom dance. I guess it’s in the blood! Who knows…maybe we have the next Derek Hough on our hands!
When and how did you discover your artistic talent?
This is something I have been asked by almost every client: “How did you get into making these beautiful costumes?” I guess we need to begin with my love for all things that sparkle! My childhood was filled with creative play and imagination! I’ve danced since the age of 3, trained in ballet, tap, and jazz. My grandmother, a sewing machine wizard, regularly created tulle and tutu creations for me and my sister to perform our own shows in the living room. Often, I would attempt to wear these costumes to school or the grocery store, along with my plastic princess slip-on heels! If it sparkled, or I could pretend to be a Disney™ princess in it, I was wearing it!
As I found my way into the ballroom dance world as an adult, I was transformed into a Disney princess all over again! Sequins are fun…but Swarovski crystals are in a league of their own—they are absolutely mesmerizing the way the glass crystals of all different sizes and colors reflect the dance floor lighting. You cannot look away—until you see the price tag! Thousands and thousands of dollars! A dancer could easily pay $8,000 or more for a gown. In the competitive dance world, a dress is more than a statement piece or something to feel pretty in, you want the judges’ attention and your dress better be one-of-a-kind. The garment becomes just as competitive as the dancers themselves. However, how was I going to afford one of these crystal majesties to spin around in?
There had to be a way. I’m creatively minded, no stranger to costuming and dance wear, and involved at a dance studio where there is so much competitive dance experience already, it made perfect sense to start making ballroom dresses! My business partner, Rebecca Goodrich, who is a marketing wiz, does an amazing job getting the word out about our beautiful dresses. That’s how our dresses find their way to all corners of the globe. Just recently, a dress of ours was shipped (with lots of bubble wrap) all the way to the dance floors in Australia!
How did costume design become your creative outlet as an adult?
Not only is creating gorgeous costumes creative and fun, I also need it out of necessity as a performer! Each and every performance requires its own costume to light up the dance floor.
You must love it! Tell us more.
What I love most about ballroom dress design and embellishment, “bedazzling” if you wish to call it, is how it makes my dancers feel! There is something magical that happens to a performer when they look and feel the part. Each one immediately steps into their role, becoming someone else or an alter-ego character—the confidence, poise, and total sass just pours out! Belle Âme Dresses always attempt to make a dancer’s sparkly rhinestone dreams come true.
How would you describe color palette of your life?
Honey, I am the whole color wheel! Dance is my greatest form of stress relief. I’m a big personality when I perform, leaving everything I’ve got on the dance floor. When the music starts, watch out! You never know what “color” I might be at that moment! Whatever the color is, it will be sparkling!
You’ve completely inspired us! How can we be a part of it?
