Washington state artist Beverly Ash Gilbert lives in a vibrant world of color, walking a path full of twists, turns, twirls, and unexpected joy! Her color-drenched world is invigorating, and she encourages others to join in her inspiring journey of seeking joy and guidance through dancing with color and creating what’s in your heart.
Growing up as a dreamer, Beverly loved running through the forest at her parent’s home, building forts, and playing imaginary games. She loved people but also loved time to herself to think, giving way to her imagination and letting her thoughts dip, dive, swirl, and soar. Always at the top of her mind was (and still is) the pondering of “why” and “why not?”
As she grew, she found herself in the grips of science and pursued a career at the forefront of technology, immersed in developing new materials for space applications—running experiments, writing articles, giving seminars, even writing a US Patent.
When she found her “prince” and had children, she became a stay-at-home-mom and began to feel the tickle of creating art. Her artistic journey came to life when a neighbor took her to a bead store where she found herself smitten with the colors. From there, she launched a decade of teaching, traveling, writing, and creating. In time, she found her creative spirit bubbling up again and began seeking new mediums, pushing boundaries, and exploring new ideas.
After writing six books revolving around her passion for color, art, and creativity, as well as authoring guidance card sets, creating fiber art clothing, beautifully beaded jewelry, and a plethora of incredible artworks, Beverly’s joyful journey of expression is radiant and shining.
Beverly believes: “We don’t have to be just one thing in life; our lives and passions and careers evolve, change, and grow. All we have to do is answer the call, follow new paths, and work hard.” This attitude has taken her into photography, garden design, painting, fiber art, floral design, color consultation, writing, teaching, and she’s just getting started!
“One thing I’ve learned in this crazy, wonderful, crooked, joyful journey is there are no limits! Possibilities are open to those who leap into the unknown and ask ‘why not’. It doesn't matter that we start with our feet on the ground, it's where we go, and what we dream of that matters. I’ve finally erased ‘I can’t’ from my vocabulary and look forward to seeing what lies ahead—what glorious, colorful paths there are to follow!”
This month’s cover piece, “Forever Friends” was commissioned by one of Beverly’s friends on the eve of her moving away. She wanted something to take with her to celebrate their friendship. With this in mind, Beverly depicted the two of them reaching into the stars together to represent a deep connection across time and space. We can all feel the tug of friends or family moving away and resonate with the love and eternal connection this piece evokes.
