Pink's Style Takeover

Courage and strength are synonymous with the name Barbara Rogers, our April makeover candidate. I met this friendly, outgoing woman, not realizing that her story would force me to question the inner strength I thought I possessed. We walked into Fringe Salon, which set the stage for Barbara to continue on her path to self-reinvention, and for me to learn a little something about life. Maggie Lucchesi, Barbara's stylist and one of three owners, warmly welcomed us to Fringe Salon, a bustling rejuvenation oasis. As Barbara got comfy, Maggie began a rundown of changes she had in mind for Barbara's new look. "You need color. Because of your skin tone, you don't want your hair color to be so light, it washes you out," Maggie explained. "I want to reshape your style, not cut it. You don't want it collapsing on itself because it's too short. Spring forward for 2013!" Maggie excused herself to mix the new color that would frame Barbara's new look, and I had the privilege to get an inside look into her past.

At 17, Barbara married the man of her dreams. He became ill, and Barbara took care of him for 25 years. He passed away one month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. When Barbara came to Hilton Head for a wedding, she went back to New York as owner of a coastal condo! She picked up and moved here with nothing, starting completely fresh. "I became Barbara again. I was always, 'ma' or 'Nan' or 'hey you'! Sometimes I think I'm being selfish, but having Barbara back again is exciting. I've seen women who have done nothing for themselves. That's not going to be me," she said with a determined grin. "It's a whole new life."

During this time, Maggie had been applying the new rich color to Barbara's hair to negate the gold tone that was present and washing Barbara out. "This will give her a richer, more luxurious look, and will coax the gold tone out in her skin. We'll give her a very gentle highlight that will glimmer. The chocolate color, coupled with the highlight, will compliment the tone of her skin very nicely." Maggie explained. "The glimmering highlight will add dimension." After letting the color set, Jessica Rahn, Aveda Product Specialist, washed out the color and toned the highlights. She added an Aveda botanical treatment that puts moisture back into the hair. "It fills in the holes and repairs the hair 85% in the first five minutes." Jessica explained.
Next, Maggie got to work reshaping Barbara's hairstyle, making it more contemporary and manageable. "It's natural and more complimentary. Your ends are going to be very happy!" she teased, as she began to blowdry the hair and see the progress of the cut. She added smoothing hair serum to "keep the frizzies away" and a glossing straightener. "Aveda products are very concentrated, so you don't need to use a lot." The new style already looked thicker because of the color, and the shape rendered a look of sophistication.

"I normally don't wear makeup, and if I do, I stay very light with it. My routine is basically moisturizer." Barbara said to Jessica, who is an expert Aveda makeup artist. Jessica used a light face cream, followed by a lifting serum, which boost natural collagen in the skin. Next she used a tinted moisturizer and a translucent powder to set everything. She chose a peachy pink color palate with mahogany accents to create dimension. Next she filled in Barbara's light eyebrows, to frame her features. Barbara was thrilled, "I've looked at pictures of myself and saw a blank face with glasses. There were no eyebrows!" Color on the lips was the final touch, making them stand out.

The last step to the figurative and literal new Barbara was a new outfit. The fashion forward, very knowledgeable ladies at Currents created a look perfect for spring! They started with white pants and a white sleeveless undershirt by Tribal, a designer line that utilizes great fabrics that can be coordinated in many ways, and at reasonable prices. They layered a blue mesh sweater on top of the white to welcome spring, perfectly pairing the ensemble with a yellow handbag and blue sandals (shown above) from Brighton. Barbara's look was complete!

Listening to Barbara talk about her life, I soaked in the wisdom she shared, and it inspired me to look at my own life. Hearing someone with that much strength and a love for life made me excited to start living mine without regrets. It was during her makeover that I resolved to begin my own inner makeover. What a profound and honest moment it was.
