Whitney Steed:
Glamorous Free Spirit

When you enter Whitney’s world, the phrase that immediately springs to mind is “Well, Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore!” Just substitute “Hilton Head” for “Kansas” in that phrase and you will be on the right track to understanding this exceptional young lady.

Like the Land of Oz, Whitney’s universe is filled with color, life and bling. Step into her salon, aptly named Iridescence Beauty Bar, and you will instantly know you have entered the realm of a very confident person. Descending from a long line of hairdressers and strong women who stood out in a crowd and went their own way, Whitney worked in her mom’s salon while she was growing up. She wasn’t at all sure she wanted to follow in anyone’s footsteps, but on a trip to an elaborate hair show, her eyes were opened to the possibilities to truly do her own thing beyond her mom’s salon. She opened her own salon at the age of 24. Still greatly influenced by her mother, who passed away last year, she always stays true to her own vision. We love Whitney’s glamour and self-confidence!

Who is your style icon? My Mom; she took fashion risks, especially for her day, and she never left the house without makeup on.

Heels or flats? Wedges

What’s your favorite thing in your closet right now?
My suede wedge boots with fringe!

The one fashion item you’ll let yourself splurge on is...? Shoes

Vogue or Cosmo? Vogue

On your very best stylish day, the day you knew you looked and felt fabulous all day, what were you wearing?
All black clothes, but accessorized with anything with fringe, bling, shine, or fur.

What’s the biggest fashion risk you’ve ever taken? I tried to make my own glitter shoes and suspenders for a hair show… I thought it was going to be cool, but I was just a cloud of glitter everywhere I went!

Favorite piece of jewelry? This bracelet (right) that is made out of a pair of shears.  I actually never take it off.

What is your favorite fashion era? The 80s

If you had to describe your personal style in one word what would it be? Unique
