Living a Healthy Lifestyle

“Adventure Awaits, but only for those who seek it!
Too bad, you sofa sitters. Maybe next time!”
– The Uphill Skater –

Back in the day, my husband and I used to sail out of the South Carolina Yacht Club, and we loved that life so much. We really felt like adventurers. We sailed all over the Bahamas, the coast from Savannah to the Florida Keys, and even to the Abacos Islands. We also raced and mentored young people who wanted to learn to sail. What a fabulous time we had.

Fast forward a few years, and here we are living in West Virginia, now old people, tending our little grandson and sitting around the house all day knitting and eating fatty foods. No, wait a minute. That’s not what we are doing at all. We are still looking for that fun adventure to keep our lives happening in positive ways. Maybe we are not sky diving or going into space, but we are having a really great and busy life.

We love to walk and hike and enjoyed doing that on Hilton Head. Now we hike on the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Tow Path. We also hike in Greenbriar National Park. We kayak on the Potomac River, and we run around the dog park with our new puppy. If you don’t think that is an adventure, you have not had a new puppy for a while, let me tell you.

We are also traveling a bit differently now. We always liked to drive to places but now we seem to do it way more often. We go into Washington, DC, New York, Baltimore, and the Amish Country of Pennsylvania. We are starting to fly again, too, and that means trips to California.

With all this, we are also having new interesting food adventures. We used to get our shrimp from a guy who caught it himself and sold it out of a cooler in the back of his pickup truck. Yummy! We now eat Gulf shrimp, and honestly, it is not bad. We also have discovered Maryland crab cakes. No, they are not quite as good as the HHI version, but again, not bad. No deviled crabs here yet though. There is no Mahi right off the boat here, but we get brown trout from our neighbor, and he catches it right out of the river and drops it off on the way home. Key Lime pie is hard to find here, but we live in apple country, and the things that the Amish people can make out of apples seems to be endless…and are always delicious.

Yes, life, and adventures, are different in different places and in different stages of life. All that being true, I have to tell you that perhaps our biggest adventure has been in taking on shared care of our grandson. We started to be a part of his life when he was 2 years old and he is now 8. We have been to splash pads, water parks, baby gym days, birthday parties, school conferences, story times, field trips, and more places to “Go Potty, Granny?” than I care to even talk about. DisneyWorld is in our future, too. We have been to many children’s discovery museums, too, though only one has been close in quality and imagination to our very own new one—The Sandbox on Hilton Head. It is awesome! Take your child or grandchild there, and you will see that I am right.

So, anyway, adventures come in many different forms. Sail off into the sunset, or take a toddler to a water park or the zoo. Try a new food or a new fashion look. Be bold and paint a wall in your house butter yellow. You get the picture. Life is full of adventure and an adventure is what you make of it!
