Too Much of a Good Thing
John Crum
In January of 2007 John introduced his series “Sailing Among the Clouds… a surreal journey”. John’s whimsical approach to life uses sailboats as his metaphor as he takes the viewer on an emotional journey. With this series he explores a surrealistic approach seeking to express emotions and man’s feeble attempt to control the power of Nature.
“I jokingly say I paint ‘en brain air’ as all of my paintings are generated from my imagination. Working on several paintings at a time, this series lets me explore different painting styles, techniques and applications while keeping true to the original concept.”
John received his education and formal art training at The Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. Upon graduation he enjoyed a career in graphic design and illustration, later becoming a Creative Director for educational books and magazines.
In 2001, John and his family moved to Hilton Head Island where he pursues his painting from the lowcountry while managing the Calhoun Street Art Gallery in Bluffton. John’s largest community donation is the 240’ wrap-around mural in the cafeteria of the School for the Creative Arts on Hilton Head Island. He has also documented the landmarks and landscapes of Daufuskie and Hilton Head Islands through other murals and paintings.
John’s paintings are available locally at: “Picture This Gallery” on Hilton Head Island, “Calhoun Street Art Gallery” in historical Bluffton and “The Gallery” in Beaufort. He is also represented in galleries outside South Carolina and participates in several local charity art auctions. You can view the entire series on his website: www.jkcrum.com.
