About the Cover:
Ira McCully
Swirling brushwork and bursts of color will greet the audience of New Zealand-based artist, Ira McCully. Her joyful exuberance bursts forth upon the canvas in a jovial reverie. “I am enthusiastic about life and would love just to dive inside my paintings, live in a world of color and joy.” Her world has many similarities to her work, being born in the resort town of Queenstown, New Zealand. There is no shortage of inspirational colors from Pacific skies, plants and flowers. Suffering from clinical depression has meant many dark days, especially after the early deaths of her parents from cancer, after she and her sister, Norma, had nursed them. Depresssion has taught me to work within my abilities, not push myself too hard and let go of negative influences in my life; to enjoy and build on my talents and enjoy every moment I can. McCully’s playful brushwork is sometimes tempered, as several of her works display a crisp rendering of flowers and finely crafted facial features of her female protagonists. McCully’s role as a woman and a mother is a source of inspiration and joy. After completing a Visual Communications degree, she went on to pursue a Fine Arts degree at Canterbury University, where her perspective was enriched by an exposure to feminist and Platonic ideals. Now a restaurant co-owner and full-time artist, McCully lives and works in Christchurch, New Zealand.
