What do tuning forks, Tibetan bowls, Chinese gongs, essential oils and energy medicine have in common? Alice Tobin and natural methods for healing and wholeness.

Alice is of Chinese descent, born and raised in Hong Kong. She recalls her mother using essential oils, ointments and bitter tasting herbal concoctions when she was ill. Alice’s father was a proponent of Western medicine, which she preferred at the time, since there was usually no bad taste. As she grew in age and wisdom, she embraced her roots and the elements provided by nature for healing. She found that allopathic medicines were too strong and disruptive to her body. Throughout her adult life, Alice has used mostly natural remedies for health and healing. She said the last time she remembers being sick, she had the flu in 2000 for a brief two days. She lives by the motto: “Prevention is better than cure.”

The year 2007 marked a turning point in Alice’s life path. She attended an energy medicine workshop, taught by internationally renowned healer Donna Eden. She embraced the daily practices and immediately began to notice that she had more energy and was happier. At that time, Alice’s mother, Lin, was in a nursing home in Hong Kong. Alice flew there to visit her. She had been non-responsive for five years. Alice eagerly used her newly acquired healing tools on her mom. To her delight, Lin started to gesture when Alice spoke to her and began to feed herself! She gradually began to respond to others. As a result, Alice was able to move her back to her own home with caregivers. That experience made Alice totally embrace the path of energy medicine.

In Alice’s “Intro to Energy Medicine” class, she showed participants simple exercises, using meridian tracing and tapping, along with stretching and movement, to increase energy, restore balance and relieve minor pains and anxiety. This five-minute energy routine, when practiced daily, is also known to increase one’s clarity and focus. Simple, easy to learn, effective techniques with immediate results and no harmful side effects.

In 2013, Alice began using essential oils in her energy healing sessions. She noticed desired results were appearing in half the time. She said these combined modalities can alleviate symptoms of stress, insomnia, foggy memory, headaches, allergies, pain and toxicity from chemotherapy and radiation. Alice is also a Reiki master and incorporates this hands-on technique into her sessions for stress reduction and relaxation to enhance the healing.

Sound therapy is Alice’s latest addition to her healing toolbox. She often uses her Himalayan singing bowls and tuning forks in different combinations for specific needs. “Just like you tune a piano, these instruments attune the nervous system,” she explained. The sounds penetrate and reverberate in the body, causing relaxation and a sensation of release and relief. Her Chinese wind gong, when struck, creates a spiral of energy from your feet to your head. It removes old stuck energy and invites new energy. Alice plans to offer a weekly sound meditation experience for the community, using the bowls and tuning forks. It is like taking a sound bath—very grounding.

Alice’s entire lifestyle is natural. She is fastidious about eating a balanced diet of mostly vegetables and fruit, organic whenever possible. She is a proponent of drinking sufficient purified alkaline water, using a special filtration machine. She also loves coconut oil for its healing and soothing properties, as well as its taste. Sufficient sleep is very important to Alice’s balanced lifestyle, too. “With rest, our energies are replenished and our immune systems are strengthened,” she said. A daily dose of moderate gentle exercise is also important. Her favorite activities are swimming, walking on the beach and yoga. “The balance between work and play is essential. Love, laughter, gratitude and surrounding yourself with like-minded friends will nurture your spirit,” she added. Ultimately, it is about choosing how to live. For Alice it is a peaceful, gentle existence that is all about being aware, assessing priorities and making necessary adjustments as soon as possible.
